I’ve given up the shore for Hills
These Hills
At twilight the Lough glows yet red
Clutching the last of the Sun
I’ve given up The Shore for these hills
Hills yellow with furze
Coconut smelling
And birdsong trilling out
Below ribbons of streetlights
Show colour, a friendlier yellow
It’s the mounds that have it tho’
Dusky mounds of fecund blossom
Falling away making this
Spring’s snowline of bushes
Broad brushstrokes
Nice poetry! Your blog also offers culture!
I don’t write the poems – this will explain the cultural element!
Very nice Jim, does Paul post these himself.
I post them Harry. I have tried to get him to sort out a blog but you know these arty types……
Nice stuff. Would go well with a cup of tea.
Sounds a bit like Van Gogh’s paintings. Nice imagery
Lovely!
Dusky mounds of fecund blossom…that is rich! I love it.

Fabulous lines Jim, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for reading!
Great verse.
What resonated for me was the refrain, “I’ve given up The Shore for these hills.” As I think of this, I wonder if we really need to give up something to achieve something else? What could be the way for shifting out of such scarcity mindset?

Thanks Shakti – you need to be positive and seek change would be my answer
Umm…I had to move back to Belfast (a city, whose surrounding hills softness, I miss) after we divorced and sold the house by Tyrella Beach (known as The Shore to locals)…the divorce settlement and court determined we ‘really needed to’ give up the house….I coulda put that in the poem but the colours of spring made the poetry not the divorce settlement….
But many thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.
Paul
I always enjoy Paul’s writing. This is charming in its color and I felt the brushstrokes!
Cheers Debra, I am trying to coax a few more out of him by reposting some old ones
Paul always pops up with a lovely poem just as I think, “We haven’t had a poem for awhile”. This one does give me hope that spring may show its face soon.
I am trying to encourage him to write some more Michelle. He’s been hibernating too long!
