Gingerfightback has been contacted by the BBC to see if we can help make a programme about Gingers being bullied. Having experienced this sort of thing as a kid, I know how unpleasant and damaging this can be.
BBC3’s Cherry Healey is working on a programme about prejudice and wants to hear about your experiences. In particular, she will be exploring why people seem to think it is acceptable to bully someone on account of their being a redhead.
Have you been bullied on account of your hair colour?
Do you worry about how your child will be treated?
Have you ever coloured your hair in an attempt to avoid negative comments?
Cherry would love to hear about all your experiences, good and bad. Please email cherryfilms@renegadepictures.co.uk or call 020 7164 2288.
Actually, I just cut off all my hair and dyed it red! (auburn) I think it was the hair color I was meant to have, but something went terribly wrong at birth. I was hoping to have a red-headed child. I guess I have always loved the uniqueness of it. My maiden name is McCartan so I come from a long line of redheads. I really need to update my profile picture….
Go on Susie, do it!
I have never been bullied over the color of my hair, though some people still express shock when they see me these days and find it red. 🙂
I hope Cherry uncovers some good stories. Please post something about it when it’s done, because I can find BBC things pretty easily over here.
Will do Andra.
Actually colored my hair from the age of 27 to 45 to make it MORE intense red.
The only bullying I got was being called out as Bette Midler by people on the street…
Currently hair is black with purple stripes: Ginger is too trendy the last few years in adults with no actual ginger hair. -grin-.
You GO GFB!!!
I will!
Would that I could carry the ginger look (being sallow of complexion I’m afraid I’d be rushed to hospital as soon as I dyed my hair)! I did have a classic ginger girlfriend in my youth and always admired her beautiful hair, freckles and translucent skin, all gifts I presume from her Jones descended father. Lucky girl!
I have to dye my ginger darker. When it is merely strawberry in the summer (sun bleaches it horridly), people talk to me more slowly. I have to inform them (normally punctuated with a sharp slap to the cheek) I am not a blonde.
Sheesh.
Red.
Red…..you are such a non-dyed Ginger in the wool as a communist -evil grin-
Oh , fuck off McCarthy.
ROFL! You know me too well!
Red:
Fuck move to Reno! home of gun racks in every truck, blondes have more fun (these facial hair lunatics think they’re in Vegas.a 10 hour drive and farther than LA,. and woman DIG facial hair- ugh)
Oh, and dumb-asses feel free to kill their spouses (even the rich ones in Tahoe) with no fear of the Reno police. Sorry. Reno 911.
I adore you.. stay AWAY from Reno. Mississippi has got to be better.
Prostitution in 7 counties out of 24, alcohol 24/7 (EVERY county) and legal gambling (EVERY county again) does not make up for the backwards political (how many governors do you have with pictures of elected legislators having sex in a parking lot? We’ve lost count. All is GOOD here!of this.. uh, territory.
Can’t bear to call it a state.
Mississippi…*shudder* I am from Louisiana. I much prefer the river rats and coonasses to the rednex. Where else can you elect someone governor for a four (non-consecutive) term as governor after he has been indicted for racketeering? And then wait until he is out of office to try and jail him? We have the best politics money can buy!!
I need to come visit though. Next time you see Bear, tell him we need to swing by your place right after Mexico.
Red.
yeahhhhh a blonde nicknames Red. Makes sense to me.
You may be amazed at how shallow the gene pool is here!
I am a 15 year old girl, a sophmore in HIghschool. I am constantly hazed, and teased about my red hair people goes as far as calling me fire-croach! My so-called friend posted on my wall this link on the history of gingers on facebook, turn out it is a anti-ginger site. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Ginger. when every one saw this link on my page the nicknames stayed. For example, i am called, dirty ape, fire croach, tampon etc
Sam,
serious scum… when you turn out to be one of the few, the proud, the almost extinct REAL Gingers of the world.
Lauded by every person the world over! Those cretinous students will be BEGGING for an audience.
And there’s me, a brunette who regularly dyes her hair red….
Sounds like it’s going to be an interesting documentary – exciting stuff, Jim.
Yeah it will be hopefully – It is aimed at teenagers so hopefully it will help a few kids.
We’d love to hear from some guys. Any redheaded guys out there??
Team Cherry.
You’re not gingers, you’re rangas! Embrace your oranga-status!
[…] Ginger Fight Back: Someone needs to stand up for xanthous men and women the world over. If anyone can do, he can. But he needs a little help. That is where you come into the picture comments. […]
hi, iam a redheaded male and was bullied regually for been ginger,it can be difficult to speak about without getting emotional.
Hi Nicholas
If you want to get in touch with the BBC – just email or call the number in the note.
Best wishes
thanks, i can tell them some stories but couldnt go on camera.
Just speak to them Nick – it will do you the world of good.
I just try to make a joke out of the put downs or nick-names, it usually works.
Well said Sam!
Within the last year or so I have been told that because I am a ginger I have no soul. And people will refer to gingers as a ‘species’. But then again I’ve also gotten countless compliments on my hair. But still it hurts when people say we don’t have souls. 😥
I’m ginger and it is really annoying when people think its a good comeback saying “shut up your ginger” I mean come on I already know that!!! I’m not colour blind!!!!!!!!! I just think this whole bullying thing about gingers really pathetic….I mean its a hair colour….get used to it.
Hi,
I was bullied in the early stages of school for being ginger, I managed to ignore most of it but I have noticed as I have got older that people dont treat me the same as everyone else. Even in the street people are constantly looking at me, I wish they would get over themselves because I love my hair! I do worry for my daughter as she has beautiful strawberry blonde hair and I know she will have a tough time at school like I did.
